Description

I purchased several flutes/fifes in a display case at an auction. They were listed as civil war era musical instruments. I do not know anything about flutes/fifes. This one is marked with a Harp (?) above J Wallis 135 Euston Road, Late Union SF Boro, London, F. I believe it dates to 1860 but it could be as early as 1820. I cannot find many J Wallis example flutes on the web. I found one example of a J Wallis flute that was not exactly the same as this one that the seller dated at 1820 and another example of a single key the seller dated at 1860. I believe it is a 6 key and made of boxwood. Overall it appears to be in very good antique condition. No head joint or foot joint cracks! One brass end ring is loose and needs to be reglued. One key, however, is missing and one key is a little tight/sticky moving. Measures 11.25 inches long. I think this flute has a very pleasing antique look.
NOTE: I WAS ABLE TO DIG UP SOME MORE INFORMATION ON J WALLIS. HIS BUSINESS MOVED TO 135 EUSTON RD IN 1867. HE CHANGED IS MONAKER TO INCLUDE "SON" IN 1885. HE STARTED HIS BUSINESS IN 1848 SO 1820 IS TOO EARLY.
