State issues ban on shipping compost from Oahu due to CRB infestation

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state has designated Oahu as infested by coconut rhinoceros beetles, which is triggering new restrictions.
Starting now, landscaping materials such as compost, wood chips, mulch, and palms taller than four feet are not allowed to be shipped from Oahu to uninfested places.
That includes most areas in the neighboring islands where there have been CRB detections but no widespread infestations.
PREVIOUS COVERAGE:
The new rules are in effect for at least one year, and repeat offenders can be fined up to $25,000.
The state’s plant quarantine branch is stepping up inspections at all ports.
Residents are urged to report any CRB sightings to this number here: (808) 643- 7378.
